"Copy-Cat" False Rape Claim

We have all heard of copycat murders. There is strong indication that rape claims sometimes give rise to copycat-like false rape claims. It could happen, for example, when one local dentist is accused of sexually molesting patients. Women in the locale get the idea that they can make similar allegations against their own dentists. See here.

We often notice a sudden rash of false claims in a particular region, and it is plausible to conclude that sometimes, well-publicized rape claims put ideas in some young women's heads to make false rape reports.

Young women can't help but notice the hysteria engendered by rape claims, and it teaches them that they have a powerful tool at their disposal if they want attention, if they desire to exact revenge, or if they need a handy excuse for an illicit sexual encounter. Here is one such case in the news currently:

Woman Arrested in False Report About Sexual Assault

LAGUNA NIGUEL – A woman who reported an attempted sexual assault along a busy South County street is being investigated for filing a false police report, officials said.

The woman, who has not been identified by sheriff's officials, reported that she was assaulted while walking along La Paz Road. She told deputies she was grabbed from the back and knocked to the ground near Kings Road at about 7:30 p.m.

Investigators now believe the report is false, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

"We're investigating what happened, but what she reported was false," Amormino said.

Sheriff's officials believe the woman copied details of an incident that occurred on Jan. 25, when a woman was assaulted along Alicia Parkway in Laguna Hills.

On Tuesday, the woman reported a man knocked her down, straddled her on the ground and ripped her shirt, but that she was able to get away by kicking him. Amormino said the report, which had investigators looking for a possible connection between the two incidents, was a "copy-cat."

The woman, who was described only as being in her 20s, is now being investigated for filing a false police report.
