Comment Moderation

In the past several months, this blog's audience has exploded.  The topic of false rape claims is probably the most emotional and divisive topic among gender issues, and this blog is the leader on that subject. Because of that, coupled with our traditionally uncompromising advocacy, it should not have been unexpected that our traffic surge would bring with it a fair number of haters. In the past few weeks, the comments to our posts have been subjected to countless attacks by the lunatic fringe of militant feminism. We, therefore, will be moderating comments from now on.  To our longtime commentators, this doesn't change anything aside from a slight delay in posting your comments.  We thank you for your patience.

Very glad to hear that the peanut gallery is spreading!

Our long-time readers will remember Jeana and Georgia Girl, whose comments I had to frequently delete because they highjacked many a thread with their feminist spin on the issues. Now we have people who refuse to discuss the issues at all but attack me personally (I am flattered, but it gets boring to keep reading some angry idiot ask me about my legal credentials), and to posit the feminist gospel in the most general manner.

The main problem here, and let's be honest, is that we write in a way that is extremely off-putting to anyone who is not willing to listen to reason. I would love for one of these idiots to actually discuss what we post and tell me why it's wrong. They can't, so they ask me where I went to law school as a way to "insult" me. (And by the way, it's not insulting -- I am proud of where I went to law school -- it's just not pertinent.OK, I'll reveal it: Hoboken State, class of '81.)

See, it makes no difference because this isn't a legal blog. I don't give legal advice. My "expertise" is that I do what anyone can do if they want to do it -- I follow the issue by keeping up with it.

I wouldn't be sharing anything with thee bigots. They will just find a way to use it against you.. or worse yet, use it to get to you, wich could have detrimental effects.

Right, TMOTS. That's why I don't.

at least we will still keep the community aspect of the blog and god i remeber those two from glenn sacks blog , i couldnt stand how the filth they hit us with was twisted ( had a brilliant justification by one for the others racist comments , they apparently read one on the blog at an earlier point so it was acceptable to make them ) , guys i know this is more work for you but know we appreciate what you are doing.

On the other hand, I hope that you will allow at least some of these stupid feminist "arguments" to stand, so that we can have some batting practice.

I know it's not much of a challenge, but still.

Anon,

If there is something constructive to be learned discussed, I don't see a problem with posting those. Hell, I'd much rather see a serious debate go on, as long as people are willing to keep the discussion on the points made, and not attack the person. But rarely does it even start out that way. it's straight for the jugular with a personal attack. That's the problem.

Pierce/Steven, the reason this blog is so popular is because guys like me look at you as our champions. When we're going into battle against fire breathing dragons, we want somebody they are afraid of on our side. They aren't afraid of too many MRA's but they know they can't win a debate with you guys, so they try to sabotage your blog with personal attacks.

Anon at 2:44: If I were a feminist, I wouldn't want to debate us. But then again, the only "debates" we get into are people asking me what law school I went to. Funny, nobody will debate real issues with us. Wonder why . . . .

Definitely for the best. Don't even give the feminists the air space.

Speaking of which, I just listened to Steve on AVfM radio. Great stuff! I mean, honestly, some of it is shocking beyond belief, but great that this is being exposed via a new medium.

Hey, Snark, we could use a good moderator . . . .

Well, the totalitarian feminsts seem to be orchestrating an en masse "shaming and guilting" campaign right now. This is the third Men's Rights website which has had a posting about complaints, etc... lately. You fellas do what you want, by here's my two cents: You cannot outtalk feminist women. Men just can't compete with women when it comes to nonstop talking. What they are doing is the equivalent of stomping their feet and nagging. Every time you stop what you are doing to address them you take time away from us (men) learning and bondning and you, therefore, lose. I think moderation is a bad idea. No one has a right to not be offended. In any case, I like this site and appreciate. Keep up the good work.

cdwriteme, appreciate the comment. I think moderation is a bad idea, and see this as a short-term fix. I don't have the time. I suspect that we will not moderate for long. This blog is at a crossroads, because it either keeps getting bigger or it implodes.

The problem that the moderation remdedies is this. We have experienced a growth spurt that may be unprecedented for men's rights blogs that has introduced our blog to people who never knew we existed. And for the first time ever, the feminists are seeing an articulate, reasonable, knowledgeable, and scathingly honest blog that attacks some of their most cherished beliefs. Other sites deal with this subject, and I don't mean to disrespect any of them -- none of them deal with this subject at this level of nuance and sophistication. Too many comment threads were being highjacked by these loons, diverting readers from the message. And all due respect, sir, I spend too much time at this to have a thread sent on a wild goose chase because some fucking idiot hates what we do here. Few readers noticed what was happening because we were deleting them like crazy.

This is not Speakers Corner at Hyde Park. This is a private blog that is devoted to a serious issue. The lunatic fringe of milititant feminism hates us, but they can't engage in an intelligent discussion with us. So they keep sniping at us with their little hate comments. Then our readers are diverted to deal with their hatred, and the point of the post becomes secondary to the snarky comments of angry feminists.

My preference would be to turn this into a far more serious site without any comments, and with funding. Will be making some serious decisions about this blog with Steve when my work schedule lightens the week after next.

@Archivist- If the site has really taken off to that extent, you may want to consider contracting a professional web developer to build a much more sophisticated site. There are methods to preserve and migrate all your blogspot posts, so you wouldn't have to lose anything.

In particular, a 'democratic' comments system could be an option, whereby you could have 'like' and 'dislike' buttons on comments which I'm sure you've seen on sites like youtube. If a particularly belligerent comment gets left, it will rapidly get 'disliked' into oblivion. Additionally, I've seen systems where long term trusted users (who may have gained many 'likes' on their comments over time for example) can gain administrator privileges and help you in the task of moderating.

You should ask a professional web developer for a quote. This is a great site, and now that it has so many followers it really may be worth considering.

I would like to chime in quickly. I don't really want this to have the same vibe of stifling issues and discussion like the feminist blogs.

They delete (or not even allow) even the smallest thing disagreeing with their opinion, in the narrowest possible sense.

I understand the large amount of suffering that men who have been falsely accused of rape would have if someone here came minimizing (or ridiculing their pain). However, I think that we can probably shoot down most such feminist arguments pretty fast in a very clear and cogent way, since their arguments are usually so trivial to defeat.

Anyway, just my 2cents. I have no problem if you don't approve incoherent, off-topic or truly offensive statements, but it would be good to let the world occasionally see their hateful crap.

I counted on the troops to do just that the past couple of weeks and it rarely happened before I could delete the hate speech. Funny, when we had one-tenth the audience we had a lot more commenting activity.

In any event, your opinion is taken seriously, Zarko. I will discuss with Steve.

Where did those 2 disappear to === Jeana & GG? They took plenty of flak and kept on tickin'. I always looked forward to hearing what they had to say.

Archivist said...

Jeana was smart. GG, a pain in the ass.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Jeana was quick on her feet alright, and poor GG couldn't keep up but seemed she stuck to her beliefs.

I can only check this in the evening, so sometimes I see the remnants of trolling only :).

Any decision you make will be fine with me.

Anon 8:41,

I've been looking into that exact thing, actually. Pierce and I need to discuss, but I personally hope to be on our own site before the end of the year (that's going to depend on several factors, so no promises).

I'd be willing to do programming pro bono if the timing worked out. I have php/mysql and wordpress hacking experience.

How much do the site stats match up with informal alexa data (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/falserapesociety.blogspot.com#)?

You can tell an "equality feminist" from a "gender-Raunch feminist" from the language they use. Modern Gender-raunch feminists are a much nastier crowd which shows in their nastier vulgar language.
Gender-Raunch feminism is no longer seen as an offshoot of feminism. The professor that took the saws-all with a dildo attached to it, is a prime example of "American gender-Raunch".

Freedom,

Thanks, I will likely be in contact. If you wouldn't mind sending your contact info to falserape@yahoo.com.

I work IT and have some experience with web development, so it shouldn't take too long, once the time is possible to work on it.

I tend to agree that it is a good idea to allow some feminist comments through (some, not most or all), simply because they often provide a useful insight into logical fallacies and enable us to sharpen our debating skills. Indeed, I am amazed at times how some people can only write a few sentences, yet contained within will be multiple layers of humbug, hypocrisy and non-sequiter. It is something to behold!

Other than that, it is a good idea to moderate and delete most feminist comments simply because we cannot give them the opportunity to hijack and derail this site.

Anonymous said...

"I counted on the troops to do just that the past couple of weeks and it rarely happened before I could delete the hate speech. Funny, when we had one-tenth the audience we had a lot more commenting activity."

I think there are two reasons for that. Firstly, there is only so much that most people can say that they haven't said already. This blog routinely cites news reports of false rape accusations. Which is very important, and should continue, but it's also nothing new to its regular readers.

Secondly, good comments are often deleted. Regardless whether this is the result of deliberate action or blogger eating comments on its own, it's frustrating for people to type something only to see it disappear. Worse, bad comments, that are often nothing but personal attacks, are allowed to remain. That discourages people from commenting.

"Other than that, it is a good idea to moderate and delete most feminist comments simply because we cannot give them the opportunity to hijack and derail this site."

I agree that obviously bigoted comments should be deleted. Unfortunately many people here want to label any opinion that differs from their own as "feminist".

I dislike the idea of deleting arguments from those who disagree, but I completely understand your desire to keep hateful comments from derailing the messages in your posts. Can I suggest a compromise?

Over at climateaudit.org, the blogger and moderator "snips" the portions of comments that are not in keeping with the blog's commenting policy.

So a post that used to look like this...

Personal attack, personal attack, personal attack, logical statement concerning facts about the world.

...ends up looking like this:

-snip- logical statement concerning facts about the world.

It immediately cuts down on the hate, makes for intelligent discussion, and has the benefit of publicly shaming the naughty children who cannot understand the difference between a personal attack and a logical argument. And you can never be dismissed for censorship, as you can claim to let all logical and polite arguments through.

Just a thought. I absolutely love your blog. Keep up the good work.

Archivist said...

Anon, that's worth looking into. The problem we have here is that they can't ever mount a rational argument. It devolves into feminist vomit. And trust me, it's not that they are making arguments with which I disagree -- these are thoughts that are grounded in misandry and have no basis in reality. I'd love to have a real discussion here.

Anonymous said...

I understand that you would have many posts containing nothing but "-snip-" but I like the transparency of that.

I also like that it leaves a historical record of who is willing/capable of rational argument and who is not. That matters for the long term credibility of all positions.

As it stands, deleting the posts of the haters eliminates that evidence and does not allow the full weakness of their position to shine through. Public accountability: there's no substitute.

Anonymous said...

I like this blog too but I agree with Anon, no more deleting.
