Super Bowl 2011 ads: Because female-on-male domestic violence is so-o-o funny

Yeah I saw this too tonight.

Sad part was, when I brought up the DV aspect of the ad to the roomful of my peers from work, most of them just looked at me and didn't say a word.

Don't know if it's because they think I'm right, they think I'm crazy, or if they think I'm just over-reacting and need to take things a little less seriously.

But it is tiring.

"Rape involves insertion of an erect penis or an inanimate object into the female vagina or the male anus. Legal definitions of rape may also include forced oral sex and other sexual acts."

She raped him with that soap.

I am of the belief that people don't have an emotional reaction to female-on-male domestic violence because it is hard-wired within us that the man is capable of inflicting greater harm on the woman.

The fact that she is the one committing a crime (in this case, multiple crimes), and that he is effectively foreclosed by law even from defending himself, does not trigger an emotional reaction. It might induce cringes, or laughter, but people can't muster a rooting interest for the "dominant" creature in the fight. (Why was Goliath pictured as a giant while David is usually portrayed as a callow teenage boy?)

But criminality should not be judged based emotion, and it should not be based on whether the victim COULD have flattened the aggressor.

If we want to tell men NOT to retaliate in dv situations (and male retaliation is where most women end up getting hurt in dv situations), we need to signal to men, and to women, that the victim will be protected by the law, even if the victim happens to have bigger muscles and a penis.

Do the Equal Rights Test and reverse genders or race. You know full well this ad would NEVER be made.

hmmm, I see a different interpretation:

Laying bare the sexism & prejudice: Only when (another woman) or (a white woman) is hurt is the wife's violence a problem.

Well at least it didn't seem to actually be bad. But good job for bringing it up in a group.

I've only explicitly brought up very MR stuff in with a few people at a time. There is the benefit that without a crowd they may be more open.

But I've heard some have good results when bringing it up in a larger group.

My mom mentioned this ad, as I dont watch the superbowl (I couldnt care less about any sporting event). Normally abuse of men in society is subtle and ignored/brushed off in the media, but when it is direct then there comes a whole new level of hilarity

That was the first thing I thought when I saw this commercial. You could NEVER Do this same commercial with the genders flipped.

Agreed Archivist, social engineering is an integral part of the indifference displayed in these situations.

I wrote a piece about this too. I wonder if this is going to be a new trend in advertising.

Have consumers become so dissensitized to the status quo degredation of men in advertising that they have to resort to smacking men about?

One of the points I'd make to Pepsi is that under no scenario would this ad have been aired with the genders are reversed. Even if you buy into the notion that this type of behavior is more a problem if the genders are reversed (and there is a lot of credible research that tells us this isn't so), isn't it asking a lot of our children to understand that this sort of violence is only acceptable one way?

Hell even if the genders were reversed and the man was simply telling her what she can and cannot eat, the fems would be up in arms.

Oh and I love the anti-white aspect as well. Here we have a pussy whipped black guy getting checked out by some cute white bimbo, as if that's what ANY girl wants.
