A HAIR and beauty student who falsely accused a man of raping her to gain sympathy was given a six- month community supervision order yesterday.
Because of her false accusation Jemma Knights wasted 37 hours of Lowestoft police’s time.
The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to wasting police time at Lowestoft Magistrates’ Court.
Magistrates heard Knights, who lives in support housing in Lorne Road, Lowestoft, told police in July she had been raped.
Mitzy Bond, prosecuting, said Knights had falsely claimed she was raped to try and make friends with someone at the college she was going to.
Knights had hoped to make friends by gaining the other’s person sympathy.
The magistrates were told that between July and October, Lowestoft police wasted 37 hours investigating the rape claim, which Knights eventually told officers was made up.
Knights represented herself in court and did not go into why she had made up the rape.
She told magistrates she was studying hair and beauty on a life skills course and hoped to work in a salon.

Even the bumbling Inspector Clouseau could’ve figured out that they had the wrong man.
The Bronx DA yesterday dismissed rape charges against a Haitian immigrant whose Creole accent is so thick he couldn’t even mouth the threatening words the real attacker snarled at his victim.
"There was no reason for this to happen," said chef Edmond Gaston, 46, who spent eight harrowing days on Rikers Island after being accused of the Nov. 4 gunpoint rape of a 21-year-old in the Bronx.
"I sat alone, just crying, crying, crying," the married father of two young daughters said.
Not only did he have an alibi for the horrific attack – he was preparing snacks at the Jekyll and Hyde bar downtown – he also lacked the eye-to-chin facial scar the real rapist had.
Further, when the real rapist grabbed his victim off the street he warned he had a gun with a silencer. Gaston can’t even pronounce the word.
His efforts to repeat the word in front of investigators came out a French-sounding "see-lens-uhr."
"Not only can’t he pronounce ‘silencer,’ he wouldn’t even know how to use one," said his attorney Paul Prestia, who has filed a notice of claim against the city and plans to sue for false imprisonment.
Last Saturday, police caught the man they believe to be the real rapist, Terry King, 39, of Melrose. DNA evidence linked King to a similar rape in 2000.

Once again, no bill for the man hours. Not even community
service.

Indeed. Even if a woman who makes a false accusation doesn't have the money to pay a fine, she could very well do extra community service.
the only saving grace is that she did convicted (even if only of a misdemeanor), is it will be on her record should she ever try to do it again.
And, that is really my biggest gripe about the way American police and prosecutors tend not to follow up the discovery of FRA's with at least some criminal charge.
I can understand the "cost" issue, but it cannot take too great an effort to charge them with the highest count possible, and threaten to seek the maximum penalty - then let them plead with a stipulation to not ask for the max, if only so that their crime can be attached to their record, and the court can order fines, restitution, and community service.
Too many woman simply walk away, penalty free - no fine, no service, not even an admonishment from a judge. But worse, no record. As far as the courts will be concerned should she decide to do it again, that lack of a record will (have to) be treated as if she had never committed the crime at all.
"...filed a notice of claim against the city and plans to sue for false imprisonment."
Good!
This is what needs to happen in theses cases of clear-cut misconduct and abuse of power. Such cases, and the officers involved need to be made "examples" of. There's no reason to arrest some random guy who does not fits the description, and has an alibi.
Hopefully, not only will the officers who perpetuated this stupidity be named in the suit, but they will become the "laughing-stock" within their precinct, and throughout their PD.
Anyone that dimwitted so NOT not be a cop.

Good points at the link above about the need for intellectual rigor in cultural studies.
Regarding AfOR's link above:
Another married women, out drinking sans husband, hooks up with some random guy, then regrets it. So, she does what women have done for countless centuries when faced with possible consequence for their infidelities - she cried rape.
This is really getting to be a old tired story line. But, that what happens when women think they have an easy "out" for their debauchery
And, as is also commonly the case, she simply chose to throw her lover under the bus rather than come clean. The guy gets arrested, but, fortunately, her story unravels, and she gets 18 month in jail.
Her husband is left to pick up the pieces and care for their 3 children.
It seems as though it gotten to the point where women have become so debase and so selfish that it seems that it would be wise on the part of police to automatically assume that any women who goes out with her husband/boyfriend/partner, drinks, an then claims a stranger rape has a probable cause to be lying about it.
This is, of course, not to excuse the comparable debauchery of man – but men don’t typically claim they were raped, and leave their lovers facing serious prison time as they try to cover up their infidelities. ( I believe there was one story, not that long ago, in which a man did try to claim he’d been raped – but by another man)
Of course, any man who’d been out drinking without his wife or girlfriend, who then cried rape to cover up his illicit activities, would automatically be suspect. It’s high time we had a little gender equality with regards to the way police view allegations. As I recall, that guy who tried to claim he was raped didn’t get much sympathy nor belief from the police.
Should also have added about the story AfOR linked, that while there are only 17 comment thus far, most have been in favor of her imprisonment (many calling for mere time). And, not one single "crank" comment in favor of the liar (there's usually few women who whine about women getting in trouble for FRA's with the predictable remark about "all those men" who are supposedly getting away with rape, as if even the most remote possibility that some man got away with it should somehow mean that no women, ever, should be even charged and prosecuted, let alone imprisoned.)
