Flashback: The Women's Group Organized to Shame Young Men Into Being Cannon Fodder

'Patriotic' Women Turn Humiliating Men as Young as 16 Into a Game

There was an organized group of women in World War I whose mission it was to shame young men who were not in the army to enlist.

"In August 1914, Admiral Charles Fitzgerald founded the Order of the White Feather. With the support of leading writers such as Mary Ward and Emma Orczy, the organisation encouraged women to give out white feathers to young men who had not joined the British Army.  One young woman remembers her father, Robert Smith, being given a feather on his way home from work: 'That night he came home and cried his heart out. My father was no coward, but had been reluctant to leave his family. He was thirty-four and my mother, who had two young children, had been suffering from a serious illness. Soon after this incident my father joined the army.'" http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWfeather.htm

Here's an excerpt from The Men Who Would Not Fight by Francis Beckett:

Order of the White Feather: My 'coward' grandfather

"After reading, in quick succession, four books about the men who fought the war, I took out a box of flimsy, yellowing letters, and tried yet again to imagine what my grandfather went through.

"He had three small daughters, which saved him from conscription, and his attempt to volunteer was turned down in 1914 because he was short-sighted. But in 1916, as he walked home to south London from his office, a woman gave him a white feather (an emblem of cowardice). He enlisted the next day. By that time, they cared nothing for short sight. They just wanted a body to stop a shell, which Rifleman James Cutmore duly did in February 1918, dying of his wounds on March 28.

"My mother was nine, and never got over it. In her last years, in the 1980s, her once fine brain so crippled by dementia that she could not remember the names of her children, she could still remember his dreadful, useless death. She could still talk of his last leave, when he was so shellshocked he could hardly speak and my grandmother ironed his uniform every day in the vain hope of killing the lice. She treasured his letters from the front, as well as information about his brothers who also died.

"She blamed the politicians. She blamed the generation that sent him to war. . . . .

"But most of all, she blamed that unknown woman who gave him a white feather, and the thousands of brittle, self-righteous women all over the country who had done the same. And there were thousands of them, as Will Ellsworth-Jones makes clear in his fascinating account of a group of conscientious objectors, We Will Not Fight. After the war, Virginia Woolf suggested there were only 50 or 60 white feathers handed out, but this was nonsense - as Ellsworth-Jones's diligent research shows.

"Some of his stories still have the power to make the reader angry. A 15-year-old boy lied about his age to get into the army in 1914. He was in the retreat from Mons, the Battle of the Marne and the first Battle of Ypres, before he caught a fever and was sent home. Walking across Putney Bridge, four girls gave him white feathers. 'I explained to them that I had been in the army and been discharged, and I was still only 16. Several people had collected around the girls and there was giggling, and I felt most uncomfortable and ... very humiliated.' He walked straight into the nearest recruiting office and rejoined the army."

This is what's known as "male privilege."

Powerful story. Don't know what to say other than to sigh.

i was talking about the white feather movement as an example of womens involvement in agression but this is by far the best piece i have seen on this period, well done guys.

I always figure, we can't know where we are unless we know where we came from.

Let's see, Titanic, White Feathers, Scottsboro Boys, the history of corporal punishment in the schools, and on and on and on. For a gender that is so terribly and undeservedly privileged, we males sure are quick to throw our own under the bus, aren't we?

And as for women, how can a gender that is so terribly oppressed seem to be so terribly, terribly privileged?

Love the sub-heading. The group of giggling girls who humiliated the boy - a veteran at the age of 16 - is absolutely disgusting.

Male privilege is right. Men have ALWAYS been second class citizens.

The sufrage movement did a deal with the State, shame men into signing up as cannon fodder in return for the Vote for women.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS at a fucking minimum, white feather were handed out....

My maternal grandfather, who fought at Jutland after running away to enlist at 14 got one, he then did the MurMansk tanker run in WW2 and had THREE FUCKING SHIPS torpedoed out from under him, lived to tell the tale, went back for more, and got another two white feathers handed to him.

eg even after they got the vote, women were still handing out white feather in the next bloody war.

I've read several accounts about White Feather encounters on the streets of London. I'm actually surprised that men didn't just starting ignoring the campaign and that the shame and stigma simply evaporated. This would especially true once the horrors of the trenches were revealed and the large numbers of seriously wounded soldiers returned from battle.

Private Man, after a while, when the horror of the war was apparent, there was a backlash against the White Feather women, and I will write more extensively on it. Some women gave white feathers to men who'd lost body parts in the war. The most disgusting aspect to me was the tone of ridicule so many seem to have adopted -- including the boy in the post.

It underscores that gender roles are so closely tied to one's self worth. Masculine virtues were things boys aspired to attain. Now, the cackling hens whose mission it is to tear men down insist that masculine virtues are evil.

Gotta love feminists. They could go on huge marches for the right to vote, yet they seemed strangely unwilling to campaign for the right to get shot at themselves.

Feminist motto: Love rights, hate responsibility/risk.

I notice the feminine practice of capitalizing letters when making a point was very much in use a century ago as well - it certainly reads like nagging.

Fortunately we have come some way since then. We now know shaming language a mile off, what it's true purpose is and why it should be completely ignored.

"I always figure, we can't know where we are unless we know where we came from."

Now you're making sense. Thanks for admitting the reason for feminist pioneers.

IMHO, only a cowardly man would take offense at that ad. Maybe the cowards would prefer giving birth.

Right, and women should act like ladies and not dress like sluts.

I believe you would take offense if you were shamed into giving birth.

Go back to reading the red stockings manifesto.

Tell that crap to one of the men coming back from the war with missing limbs. Tell that crap to the families/wives of men who were killed just so you can have the freedom to make such an inane and debasing comment.

I beg the blog owners here not to delete the comments of these horrible feminists because their own hateful words are the best advertisement for the men's movement.

Anon,

Let's see. Code Blue and Code Maroon.

Come on, you forgot to say we have small penises, we can't get laid, and are bitter.

Don't hold back, let it all out.

No worries, it's not going anywhere. Not by Pierce and I at least.

I like the slut comment. I mean, why should males be confined to gender roles while womyn are immune, right?

This is interesting in contrast to how men who WERE in the military were treated just a few short decades ago.

As Draftees they were forced into military servitude, only to have women such as singer Joan Baez urge young college women not to sleep with men who did not burn their draft cards and refuse to serve...

Interesting bit of history, thanks for posting. (ever read the Poem Tommy by Rudyard Kipling? It about sez it all...)

Maybe it's time to start a "white feather" campaign in reverse.

Each and everytime a feminist writer starts a rant about "male privilege" she should be awarded a White Feather of Ingratitude Award since she has avoided "Male Privelige" by not campaigning for complete equal rights - the right to be forced to sign up for selective service.

MM,

I was going to post something similar, but for all we know, big mouth actually has served (although I highly doubt it).

One can imagine a twenty-first century Dante touring the lower depths of Hell, and coming across a large group of elegant British ladies.

"Who are these women," he asks.

"They belong to The Order of the White Feather," answers his guide.

Women who have actually served don't have that kind of attitude.

They've seen up close and personal what they missed out on.

I remember well that in Australia it was the women's vote that kept the conservatives in power from 1969-1972.

So they kept Australia in the Vietnam War for another two years, including conscription and deaths - of males only of course.

This idea that women are the peace lovers is nonsense.

The neo womens movement is Really about "breaking men and boys psychologically, and making men and boys who live in western countries ..disposable!!!
A broken and divided patriarchy means that a small segment of males, and 50% of females...get to harvest the labor of the underclass/broken males.
This dynamic has worked for 30-40 years, but now the Ruling elite are so perverted they are collapsing the country.

Anonymous said...

The perverts who "construct" the western countries "women as victim paradigm" most likely have never changed a tire before.
I believe there are way more male "constructionists" than female "constructionists".
The deviant male "constructionists" just just use women and college girls as the mules to carry the agitation propaganda.
The deviant male "constructionists" can reap the rewards, and still remain in relative obscurity.

Instead of handing out white feathers why didn't these women jump in the trenches and stop the shells with their own bodies?

But feminists have a one-sided view of history: they don't care that MEN have been discriminated against through the centuries. They always think they THEY are the victims, even when men are shipped off to die.
