We are constantly hearing about the prevalence of rape on campus, even though law enforcement's official crime statistics never support the claim that rape on campus is rampant. To show that rape on campus is rampant, we are told that the vast majority of rapes are not reported. The extent of underreporting has never been plausibly demonstrated, and the entire field is so terribly politicized that we can't trust the telephone polls that NOW and RAINN and their ilk rely on. What does seem to be the bigger problem on campus are false rape claims. Time and time again we report on this site that a college rape claim has turned out to be false. To our knowledge, none of these false rape claims find their way into any official crime statistics (except, we suspect, they are still counted as actual rapes in some tallies) despite the fact that the crime victimizes one class of students to the exclusion of the other: male students.
Note, in the following story, the false accuser isn't named. To its credit, when the Washington Post previously reported this alleged rape, it didn't name the male suspect. See here.
Pr. George's college student recants rape allegation, police say
Investigators with the Prince George’s County Police Department have determined that an alleged sexual assault on the Largo campus of Prince George’s Community College Wednesday was a consensual encounter, a police spokesman said Thursday.
Officer Evan Baxter, the spokesman, said investigators have released the man they had in custody for the incident without criminal charges.
The woman, whom college officials identified as a community college student, had told police Wednesday that she was sexually assaulted outside the Center for Advanced Technology. Baxter said the woman “ended up recanting the rape itself,” and she acknowledged the activity between her and the man was consensual. Baxter said police had recovered some physical evidence during their investigation but he could not say what it was.

LT update:
"Taylor was charged with third-degree rape -- a felony involving sex with a minor below the age of 17 -- and patronizing a prostitute in the third degree, a misdemeanor. The felony charge is punishable by up to four years in jail and the misdemeanor charge is punishable by up to a year in jail, authorities said at an afternoon news conference.
A judge set bail for Taylor at $75,000."

I disagree with calling sex with someone below the arbitrary age of consent "rape". Calling it "rape" makes it sound like he is being accused of forcing a 16-year-old to have sex, which is not the case here. If she were just a year older in New York, or the same age in a number of other states, then it wouldn't have been "rape".

I note that in many statutory rape cases involving boys and women, the news media does not call it "rape" and, at the very least, it ought to be consistent.
I have mixed feelings. I think your discussion of the age is an appropriate consideration. I would consider it "rape" with a child below a certain age, regardless of his or her putative consent. The idea is that the "consent" is fatally flawed when the kid is below a certain age -- it's not real consent, any more than an inebriated or mentally deficient person can truly consent.

WOW!
Just WOW!
So I could be having sex with a 17 year old on a blanket under the stars, we could roll over still coupled, cross a state line BUT STILL BE IN THE SAME COUNTRY, and suddenly it is statutory rape!!!!
Wow....
I, hell, words fail me.
Words failed AfOR? Call the National Guard - the world is ending!
lol
Well I knew you had this thing where you could be driving down the road and cross a state line and suddenly the handgun in the glove box was illegal and stuff...
but I had no idea whatsoever that basic tenets of civilisation like the age of consent changed too...
do you have same problems with things like;
1/ age to vote
2/ age to buy a beer
3/ age to get a driving licence
4/ age to enter a contract with another
5/ age to get a job and pay tax
?
When I was in college I was told by the Rape Awareness Center on campus that a woman would never, ever, ever, ever lie about rape. Ever. She is always
to be believed 100% of the time. Period.
Institutionalized lies contribute to false rape accusations!
False Rape is real and must be stopped through tougher laws!
Support lawmakers who support change!
Demand justice now!
AfOR,
Yes, there are some slight variations within a year or two on most of the things you mentioned.
Except voting, that's 18 regardless.
The legal view of the age of consent concept is one I have a hard time wrapping my head around, and I'm in the child therapy field. There are so many variations of what age minor can consensually have sex with another age minor or adult and what is/isn't reportable to CPS, that I have to consult a chart whenever a new incident arises.
E.g. a 15 year old can consensually have sex with a 22 year old and it's not reportable, as defined by law, but it is still legally defined as statutory rape.
Very odd.
And then there's this:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/facebook/7685381/Facebook-hacker-jailed-after-falsely-accusing-boyfriend-of-rape.html
Seems like these false accusers are getting more focus and more penalties, or maybe that's just a recent run.
"I would consider it "rape" with a child below a certain age, regardless of his or her putative consent. The idea is that the "consent" is fatally flawed when the kid is below a certain age."
Yes, but it is very difficult to express that as an integer. The idea that, in some places, it is a felony at 17 and no crime at all at 18 seems absurd. No one is suggesting that sex with a five-year-old should be legal, but the reality is that teenagers are often quite willing to have sex on their own accord. That doesn't make it rape.
What isn't based on the teenager's ability to consent is that the law often depends on the age of the other person -- that it is rape only if one participant is more than a few years older. While the idea is to keep men from "preying" on teenage girls, it ignores that teenage girls are generally attracted to older guys.
It get more complex still nowadays, a citizen of the UK can go to canada and have a legal consensual sexual relationship with a canadian citizen, and then return to the Uk to find themselves automatically convicted (no defence possible) of statutory rape.
AoC in UK = 16
AoC in Canada = 14 (I believe)
AfOR, re: Canada, I think it is 14 so long as you are no older than 16, 15 so long as you are no older than 17, then at 16, anyone's game.
"AfOR, re: Canada, I think it is 14 so long as you are no older than 16, 15 so long as you are no older than 17, then at 16, anyone's game."
So due to the colder air, a fifteen-year-old has the ability to consent to sex with seventeen-year-old, but does not have the ability to consent to sex with an eighteen-year-old?
If a fifteen-year-old is having sex with a seventeen-year-old, who turns eighteen while the other is still fifteen, can they keep at it, or do they have to take a few months off?
I'm thinking in that case no one would care. I'm guessing the parents are already okay with it, if it's on ongoing relationship.
We can get real crazy with this stuff.
Okay, so...what if she's 15 AND he turns 18 WHILE they're having sex?
BOOM! Call CPS.
"I'm guessing the parents are already okay with it, if it's on ongoing relationship."
What if they don't know? Or what if she gets pregnant?
"We can get real crazy with this stuff."
Yes, that's the point.

Rape hysteria "Empowers" the Gender/Raunch community on college campusses around the country.
There is one thing that would temper the "hysteria power" that currently "Empowers" the Gender/Raunch community; And that would be if law enforcement started charging false rape accussers.
The truth would quickly diffuse the faulty and inflamatory Rhetoric that "Empowers" the gender/Raunch community; and that is why the Gender/Raunch community have in effect "perverted" most law enforcement to keep the truth from the public.
The gender/Raunch community have perverted law enforcement into no longer charging false rape accussers.
The gender/Raunch community will not be happy until all males are single homosexuals, and lesbians are paid hefty state and federal dollars to have children.
