Note to our readers about spam

I only activate comment moderation for new posts when we have a particularly heavy influx of trolls and blowhards. I have determined that I don't have time to respond to every blowhard and will only respond to trolls if my involvement presents a teaching moment.

What I have discovered, however, is that making it easy to comment on this site has exposed older posts to spamming -- goofy ads that are unrelated to anything we're doing here.  I therefore have activated comment moderation for the non-current posts just to avoid having the site riddled with spam.
