His name is Rev. Zeljko Guberovic. He's the priest who hounded Biurny Peguero Gonzalez to come forward and recant.
I tried to locate Father Guberovic, because I want to write to him. He seems to have moved on from the parish where this incident occurred and I can't find him. If anyone knows his whereabouts, please let us know.
You see, Father Guverovic is a hero, and I want to thank him.
In an age when Catholic clergymen have been unfairly painted with a broad brush as child molestors (similar to the hateful attitude that declares "all men are rapists"), it is well to remember that countless clergymen are out in the trenches day in and day out, helping countless people in countless ways we never hear about. This particular priest knew that a terrible injustice had occurred, and that for every day a man sat in prison, a terrible justice was still occurring. He insisted that a young woman who had told a terrible lie make it right. This had to be painful for the good priest, and it would have been easier for him not to become involved.
The next time you hear some Catholic basher make an off-hand "jest" about Catholic priests and altar boys, kindly remember Father Zeljko Guberovic, and in his name, chide the "comedian" that the vast majority of priests, like the vast majority of men, are good people who do their jobs and try to do the right thing day in and day out. And sometimes, like Father Guberovic, they even do heroic things.

Rape Liar Didn't Want To Confess Because She Was Pregnant
The woman whose false rape accusations put an innocent man in prison for four years wouldn't have admitted her story was a lie if she knew she was pregnant at the time, according to court documents. Biurny Peguero Gonzalez told investigators she wouldn't have come forward during confessional with her priest if she knew she was going to have a child. "She said that had she been aware of her pregnancy, she probably would not have confessed when she did," the papers state.
According to the Post, the documents filed by the prosecution also reveal that after learning of her pregnancy, Gonzalez tried to avoid contacting authorities. The 27-year-old—who claimed she was raped in Upper Manhattan in 2005 to cover up a fight with her girlfriends and make them feel sorry for her—reportedly lied to her priest by saying she couldn't confess to her lawyer because she had lost her cellphone.
When she finally called her attorney, "it was from a church phone, with the priest watching to be sure she finished the job," the tabloid notes. Gonzalez's admission allowed Bronx construction worker William McCaffrey, 33, to have his 20-year sentence overturned. Gonzalez was sentenced yesterday 1 to 3 years behind bars for perjury.

You're completely right. We should never stand for clergymen (Catholic or otherwise) being tarred as child molestors, rapists, etc.
It's just another example of men being targeted for being men.
This must be opposed by all of us - including the non-religious (like myself).
Thank you, Snark. Beautifully stated. A friend of mine was a priest (he died of a sudden illness) but when the clergy sex scandal struck, he said he was ashamed to wear his collar in public. This is a man who'd done good all his life and, as Snark said, was now being tarred for being a man.

A priest is an easy target for false accusations.
I was a n altar boy growing up and the priest that taught me how to serve mass was thrown out of his parish based on someone's accusation of a rape that supposedly happened 25 years or more earlier.
They pretty much did a hot job on him in my local paper....so I stopped subscribing to it as a result.
NO ONE will believe a priest did NOT do anything.
I knew this guy and it showed me how easy it is to destroy someones entire life and reputation.

Hey Lexxie, way out of line. Nobody here disputes that some priests have abused children and that some Bishops covered it up. If you read this blog long enough, you will understand that our mission is to end these vile stereotypes that tend to paint ALL priests as moletester; ALL men as rapists, or violent, or selfish.
We are not a site that defends wrongdoing. We are a site that doesn't like the good members of a group to be unfairly tainted by the bad.
The vast majority of priests don't fit that group. Sorry. Won't sell here.

Lexie, please don't post here again. We live in a world where false accusations of rape that ruin countless men every year, including many of our readers, are tolerated, even implicitly encouraged. If you are a regular reader (and you're not), you'd would know how that occurs. Prosecutors, police, judges, television reporters, sexual assault counselors, college administrators, and many, many others play along and allow innocent men to be treated as collateral damage in the "more important" war on rape. The victimization of our sons is treated as less important than the victimization of our daughters.
When someone goes out of his way to insure that an innocent men is freed from a multiple year false rape hell, you are damn right we are going to put him on a pedestal. Why? Because so few people do it. And one innocent man might still be in prison -- being raped (he suggested he was subjected to prison atrocities) -- if it were not for this priest.
Shame on you for trivializing a heroic act that spared an innocent man of this hell. Shame on you!

No, the only real solution is changing the law. For a solution to work it needs to correctly identify the problem it is trying to solve.

example 1..When police arrest a non violent man in a domestic violence situation, and hold him in jail until he pleads guilty to a lessor charge just to get out, this sir is one of the ways law enforcement is "manufacturing statistics".
Another example of the current law enforcement practice of "manufacturing faulty and inflammatory misinformation" is my own false rape accusation case.
When i was brought down to the police station for questioning, i was so humiliated for being there on a rape accusation that I specifically requested that i will not cooperate unless i know this girl will be charged with for making this false rape accusation against me.
The law enforcement officers assured me that "yes if she made a false rape accusation against you (something that could put me in jail for 20 years, or get me Rape lynched) that she would be charged.
Well after the facts came out, and there were no taxi cab reports to be found ( she said i raped her and she ran out of my apartment and took a cab home)..and there were 2 semen loads in her and neither were mine, it was clear her rape accusation against me was a lie.
I then demanded she be charged in order to clear my name to the people she told this false rape accusation to, and thats when i understood another perversion in the current law enforcement protocol that "manufactures faulty and inflammatory misinformation.
You see in order to meet their gender feminist bosses 2% false rape accusation number, when in reality the percentages are much higher, the law enforcement community simply "re-defines what the meaning of is, is"
The law enforcement community that handled my case told me that "WE DON'T KNOW SHE WAS LYING TO US", and i said "what do you mean you don't know she was lying to to, did you not check the taxi cab company that she said came and got her from my apartment, did you not check the 2 semen loads in her from the 2 other guys she had sex for drugs with???"
They started to get angry with me for insisting she be charged, and in effect told me to go away. Now i understand they don't want to leave any PAPER TRAILS of false rape accusations. By Not leaving any paper trails of false rape accusations, they can continue to tell the public the faulty and inflammatory misinformation that only 2% of all rape accusations are false, when the reality is much greater.
It is these procedural protocols that are in effect "manufacturing faulty and inflammatory misinformation that is building a societal pre-judice against the innocent.
It is un-constitutional to use state and federal funds to manufacture a prejudice like the way law enforcement across the country are now engaging in.

There is an alliance, in the sense that politics makes strange bedfellows. Law enforcement is under inappropriate scrutiny from rape feminist groups to take rape "seriously." Among many other things, the result is that law enforcement often takes precautions that it otherwise would not take. It arrests men based on the say so of a lone accuser because to refuse to do that would be seen as "not believing" a rape victim . And rather than release an accused rapist while they investigate, they fear the remote possibility that he will actually rape someone if released. If that were to occur, the hue and cry would sound wide and far among women's groups and the police officers who released him likely would lose their jobs. DAs are under similar pressures, as are judges.
The paramount fear of law enforcement is to have their faces splashed all over the evening news for having been "lenient" with a rapist. While women's groups lead the protests, the hysterical, law and order pulic gets right in line.
Thus, law enforcement gives muscle to this zero tolerance for any rape accusation, but rape feminism is leading the charge.
And most politicians realize that it would be political suicide to be seen as taking a softer line on sex offenders, which is invariably how such measures would be portrayed in the media or by political opponents.
We currently live in a time where populism rules the day, and the most lazy and emotive argument tends to win out. Things were not always quite like that.
When you have the women's groups, the law-and-order populists and the whole legal industry pushing the same barrow, it is a formidable alliance.
