. . . The One-in-Four claim is no more true than the claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, or the claim that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. But unlike those oft-repeated, media-reported, equally unfortunate examples, the One-in-Four figure maintains its grip on both the public and the private consciousness. It has been rebuked, disclaimed, and defamed, yet still it persists. It grows, it spreads, and it will not die — even though it’s been drawn and quartered and buried by an overwhelming force of fact and truth and data that will not be manipulated.

Writer pulls no punches: the infamous one-in-four rape stat is a complete fabrication

"During a five-year college career, one in five women will be a victim of rape or attempted rape, according to a U.S. Department of Justice estimate in a 2005 report.
The federal estimate is based on extrapolating over a five-year college career figures showing that 3 percent of all college women become victims of rape or attempted rape in a nine-month academic year".
Could there be a more blatant excuse exist for enabling more women to make false rape, sexual assault and, other false accusations concerning violence against women?
The answer is; YES!
This should be a very loud wake up call for any and all men!
Nice rant. No facts. If it's not one in four, what is it? Tell that to the rape victims from my alma mater.

Anon,
Try actually reading the article, as it cites some statistics - 'facts', if you will.
Your anecdotal evidence unfortunately cannot disprove statistical evidence, so your point - that you know rape victims - is irrelevant, unless you believe that your subjective experience defines everybody else's reality.
Anon at 2:49, go haunt some man-bashing site.
Please see my comment under Mr. Hermann's piece -- and add your own, too.
UVA Grad:
Should we tell it to all 2,948 of your alma mater's rape victims from the past four years?
If the One-in-Four figure is true -- and it's not; feel free to follow the Mac Donald or Hoff Sommers links in my post, or stay tuned for the next installment of the series -- then that's how many female UVA students have been sexually assaulted since December 2005.
I would say that those numbers make UVA the most dangerous campus in the country. But the One-in-Four Myth claims that EVERY campus in the country is that dangerous.
Seems a little hard to believe, don't you think?
Add this to the fact that 'rape' and 'sexual assault' are now so widely defined - a deliberate move by radical femifascists to criminalise more men, just for being men - and you start to realise that very, very few women are ever sexually assaulted, ever.
Quit sidestepping.
If it's not ONE in FOUR, what is it?
And let's be clear that college campuses are dangerous for unsuspecting women. The most dangerous periods are spring and fall. FRAT PLEDGING, INITIATIONS. You want more examples than UVA?
Anon at 5:14, seriously, we don't tolerated hate speech here. This site is dedicated to giving voice to persons who have been falsely accused of rape. We are the world's leading site dedicated to that purpose. We have a lot of readers who fall into that category, and you denigrate their victimization by your anger and yor childish insistence that rape is rampant. A hell of a lot of our readers have been seriously hurt by people who insisted they were raped when it just didn't happen. Just as a rape site wouldn't welcome some idiot who insists all rape claims are false, I am going to ban/delete your comments if you can't conduct yourself in a fashion respectful of our readers' victimization.
I meant anon at 5:24.
Well, Anon, if you had bothered to read the article, it suggests that one in three-hundred and ninety two is somewhere closer to reality.
Being a rape survivor does not entitle you to dominate discourse on rape.
And seriously, I don't understand why we are having to recount what is stated in the article which is linked to in, and is the focus of, the original post.
Either you read it first, or you stop arguing.
"Why do you suppose it persists?"
For the same reason the notion that the world was flat persisted. People got burned at the stake for questioning that too.
Snark, great reply.
Why does one-in-four persist? Money. Funding, to be more specific, and as we demonstrated here the other day.
We're not going to have this thread highjacked by a loon.
Also, the one-in-four statistic is dramatic and exciting. People latch onto things like that and run with them.
It's the same phenomenon as we see with those e-mails that circulate about Coke being transported in trucks labeled "caustic hazard" and McDonald's being the world's biggest purchaser of cow eyes.
No matter how you try to debunk it, people will insist on believing it, because they WANT TO.
Am I the only one who missed something here? What comment are you referring to when you talk about
"why does the one in four persist?"
It was a troll post that was deleted.
Did anybody answer the troll's question?
Why does one-in-four persist? Money. Funding, to be more specific, and as we demonstrated here the other day.
I assume you didn't see this in Pierce's post.
Quit sidestepping, feminazi troll.
If it's not ONE in FOUR, what is it? Feminists don't know either because feminists lie for political reasons!
And let's be clear that college campuses are dangerous for false rape against unsuspecting men. The most dangerous periods are spring, winter and fall. ACADEMIC FEMINIST LIES. You want more examples than UVA?

Are we to believe that The U.S. Department Of Justice has a crystal ball to peer into the future?
It's good to see the 1-in-4 rape lie slowly dying, and that its few hard-core supporters hastening its eventual death with their inane argumentation.
With the establishment of Men's Studies as a serious academic pursuit in a New York University announced yesterday - with credible academics behind it, like Cathy Young - it'll be interesting to see how quickly more of the propaganda war against men gets exposed and denounced.
"Did anybody answer the troll's question?"
Obvious troll is obvious. We answered the question, yes, as you can clearly see in the comments.
The faulty and inflamatory 1 in 4 women will be raped "manufactured statistic" will go down in the history books as symbolic of the degree of perversion coming from modern "gender feminist hysteria Klan".
the comparison with Iraq is bad, because it makes the rape thing look like it might be somewhat of an issue of 'opinion', or an area of uncertainty.

Hah! Best comment in this thread!!
Having personal experience as a college student, at UVa actually, has led me to different conclusions. From a 2007 UVa graduate student study the number at UVa (from classifying student responses, much like the Koss study) is one-in-five. Many peer education groups use anonymous surveys in their awareness presentations that bring numbers out of these small samples. Again the number is close to one in five, even higher in some populations. These random surveys have a huge effect on those involved. I understand the math seems far fetched, but living and going to school here, I can tell you the reality is much more unbelievable.
No, it's not one in five either. Nice try though.
anon at 2:46, what counts as an "attempted rape"?
