Woman who cried rape after sex with man she met online is jailed for nine months

Comments interspersed.

Beverly Stephenson gets 9 months jail for false rape claims.

A woman who posted explicit photographs of herself on the web and then falsely claimed a man she met online had raped her has been jailed for nine months.

Beverley Stephenson's false allegation sparked a full police investigation, including house-to-house inquiries, a poster campaign, and a press appeal.

Stephenson, 42, from Horden, Sunderland, admitted perverting the course of justice between April 5 and May 14, last year.

Judge John Evans, passing sentence, said: 'People who make false allegations such as these undermine the criminal justice system, and there are serious implications for genuine victims.

Never mind the direct victims of a false accusation, the falsely accused, judge. Let's again focus on the possible, hypothetical future victims, and completely minimize the damage done to those, who, by your account, just aren't important, the falsely accused men.

'Your fabricated claims completely undermined the investigation into your own allegation of rape.'

He added: 'All of this is of your own making. You could have called a halt to it at any time. I am told you have psychological and other difficulties, but they cannot excuse what you did.'

Stephenson wept as she was jailed and had to be helped from the dock as she was led away.

Prosecutor Amanda Rippon said Stephenson initially told police she did not know the identity of her alleged attacker.

She later falsely indicated he might have been a member of a family with whom she had fallen out.

'Her accounts resulted in the arrest and questioning of three men,' Mrs Rippon added. 'At least two of the men were kept in custody for several hours.

3 men. Wouldn't you think that after it was realized that the first man was falsely accused, they wouldn't have pulled in 2 more?

'Each of the men said being implicated, albeit wrongly, in a rape has caused them embarrassment and difficulties with their own friends and families.'

And that is the damage that is often minimized and overlooked in a false accusation. This is why the punishment for false accusations needs to be more severe.

Police became suspicious of Stephenson when she claimed hair pulled from her head in the attack actually came from her hairbrush.

The court heard she had sex in her lounge with the man she met online, but the evidence suggested it was consensual.

Alexia Zimbler, defending, said: 'This is an unusual case in that Ms Stephenson still maintains she was raped.

Of course. Continually proclaiming she was raped, even after it is shown it was consensual, maintains the "victimhood" status, as well as sets up a defense of mental incapacity. In this case, It doesn't look like the judge bought it, thankfully.

'But she accepts the way in which she misled the police made it impossible for that allegation to be properly investigated.

'She was ashamed and embarrassed by the way she met this man, and feared the police would not believe her or take her seriously if she told the truth about that.'

Thanks to one of our readers for the tip.

False rape accusations against men must stop. Today many women/girls believe that falsifying a rape is a legitimate choice and sure method of empowerment against men.

A while back someone was making the comment about the looks of these women that file false rape claims.

IMO 8 out of 10 or better of these women look so horrible they should be very happy that a guy would even bother with them.

You guys on here should make a photo album of all these women for this site!

Identities and photographs of accusers are rarely published, so it's foolish to make such a presumptive statement.

Did it occur to you perhaps attractive false accusers are more readily believed, and don't get caught?

Ya think a Judge and jury looking at a stunning woman is going to think "She's just making that up, no guy would rape a woman that looks like her?"

It is the Judicial system's place to make a photo album of false accusers, as part of a public sex offender registry.

This is something that needs to be demanded of LE to protect innocent citizens from repeat criminal behavior.

I agree this should be done. There should be an easily accessible catalogue of false accusers, with names, recent photos and locations listed.

In lieu of the 'justice' system actually doing this any time soon, I can at least sympathise with Anon's suggestion that a catalogue be compiled anyway.

My false rape accuser was never charged, even when i demanded she be charged. I was also the second guy that year that she falsely accused of rape.
She even got a large chunk of "victim funds" from the womens rape crisis center that she never had to pay back...because these centers tout that they "always believe the women"...and in my case they "always believe the women"..EVEN WHEN SHE IS LYING!!
It is a perversion to give women and girls state and federal taxpayer dollars for their false rape accusations.

What are the legal ramifications of doing something like that?

There used to be a name and shame site on the internet years back, but I see it no longer exists.

Is publicly picturing and naming your accuser subject to civil complaints for slander or libel?

Scott: There is little research to support it, but I believe once an accuser, many will reoffend - it's just TOO easy not to.

There should also be a false domestic abuse accuser's list, as well - I can guarantee the two lists will contain many of the same faces...

They are already named and pictured in the media on their websites so wouldn't the media be in legal trouble?

Sgt Mom

I think you are arguing with people who are ON YOUR SIDE.

Not sure, which is why I was careful to say I sympathise with the idea rather than I actually support it happening ;)

I would have thought that if their names and photographs are published in the media, then there is no law against directly referencing this ... I'm not sure how well collating would go down.

Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable about the law could enlighten us.

Even if this were permitted though, I'm sure that such a (hypothetical!) list could only contain those false accusers who are a) found out and b) publicised ... beyond that anyone who compiled such a list would be committing libel, I believe.

That's code for 'If I'd known how this was going to turn out, I'd have used a different lie'.

Does anyone have any idea what these funds are comprised of?

How much money is allotted per 'victim' (I've heard the rumor $10,000), what they are earmarked for, and who is the beneficiary of them (social workers? designated therapists?)

My son's accuser - AND her mother - were both enjoying these 'benefits' as 'victims'.

Apparently her father and siblings victimization-by-proxy had to go "untreated".

When his 'treatment providers' began questioning her 'treatment providers' to confirm details of The Crime, she suddenly "bounced back" and no longer needed "treatment".

It was a triumph of successful 'closure'.

I've heard these programs referred to as " welfare for people with worthless degrees".

Akin to a serial rapist.

Baby steps. Nine months incarcerated is a good baby step.

We can only hope Law Enforcement throughout the country read this blog too.

Seems that FRAs are getting more and more wide spread.

I just had my first brush with one today.

A friend of mine has had a female friend (one of his best friends) accuse him of raping her. She has yet to go to the Police but is telling everyone she will.

Why?

Because he broke up with his girlfriend and didn't go out with her directly afterwards.

That seems to be a good enough reason to try and get a man jailed and all his friends to turn on him.

Sick and messed up.

She has been trying to hook up with him at every party for years, there is no way that he would rape her when she was trying to give it willingly for years.

"Hell hat no fury" and all that...

[[She has been trying to hook up with him at every party for years, there is no way that he would rape her when she was trying to give it willingly for years.]]

How do you know she was trying to GIVE IT WILLINGLY for years. Is that what he told you?

Do you understand that wanting to hook up is completely different than wanting to "give it"?

Your wording suggests that if a woman flirts, she wants SEX. Men should NEVER assume that a woman wants sex. To do so might get you accused of rape.

I figured that people would be able to fill in the blanks and as such didn't feel i had to labour the point.

Though to clarify, her willingness to sleep (aka sex) and date him were well known. Often being voiced by her and her friends at parties. Often said directly to him and his friends.

My wording was to imply that we very well knew she wanted sex. I didn't realise every word would be put up for tribunal and have an attempt to distort it undertaken.

Though I'm not sure if it is just a cultural difference, however in Australia and my social groups when we say "hook up" we mean "have sex" most of the time.

Hope that cleared that up :)

For years I have wondered why FRA victims publicly exonerated aren't more publicly vocal about what happened to them.

Why aren't they screaming about this to high heaven?

I now know this 'anonymous' poster is the reason why.

There are very irrational, disturbed people out there.
