STORY NUMBER 1

Southwest Fla. college campus closed after assault

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A southwest Florida college has been closed after a student was assaulted on campus.

Authorities say the incident happened at Edison State College in Punta Gorda Thursday morning.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office says a female student left class to use the restroom, where she was assaulted by two men with a knife. Investigators say she did not recognize her attackers.

An Edison State College spokeswoman says the woman's injuries are not life-threatening.

Two students went to look for the woman after she didn't return to class. They found her in the bathroom and immediately contacted authorities. The campus was closed and classes canceled for the rest of the day as detectives, search dogs and helicopters patrolled the area for the suspects.

STORY NUMBER 2

Authorities: Report of assault at college false

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Authorities determined that a report of an assault at Edison State College last week was false.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office says Thursday's report that a female student left class to use the restroom, where she was assaulted by two men with a knife was fabricated. Authorities say after an investigation she acknowledged this.

Authorities said the woman's injuries were self-inflicted. Authorities say a knife was found in the restroom trash and her fingerprints were found on the paper towel wrapped around it. It was later determined the knife belonged to her husband.

The woman asked for counseling. No charges have been filed against her.

Edison State said student disciplinary guidelines and procedures pertaining to this case are under review.

It's always a sickness when they get caught lying, isn't it? Although I must say, in this case it seems like the woman's story was less premeditated and vicious than most.

I'd rather cases like this not be the flag bearers for getting tough on false accusations, as there is too much room for sympathy and the muddy waters of "mitigating circumstances." I'd much rather see someone that accused a specific person with premeditation (there are enough of those anyway) be subjected to having the book thrown at them.

Kgun5, while these sorts of false accusers are the "most" sympathetic of false accusers (if such a thing is possible), they are still a danger to innocent men and boys. I suspect she was seeking attention or sympathy. Prof. Kanin's landmark rape study of a Midwestern town had this to say about such motivations: "Attention/Sympathy-Getting Device. Although this device seems to be the most extravagant use for which a false rape charge is made, it is also the most socially harmless in that no one was identified as therapist. Approximately 18% . . . of the false charges clearly served this function. "

We would add, however, that on this website we sometimes report on cases where rape lies made for attention or sympathy spiral out of control, and innocent men or boys are nabbed in the web of deceit created by the false accuser. Try to put yourself in the shoes of a hapless male questioned, then arrested and charged for a rape claim that turns out to be a plea for attention. Try to imagine the terror of not knowing if you will spend years in prison, your life essentially destroyed, all because of a lie. Try to imagine the outrage. In fact, unless you've lived through it, it is an unimaginable horror.

In addition, these cries for attention often put entire towns in fear. And sadly, some people use the fear engendered by a rape lie as a warning -- not about false rape claims but about rape in general -- thus, rape lies are used to foment further rape hysteria. Rape hysteria is the engine that drives our rape culture, and false rape claims are its noxious emissions because the hysteria creates instant plausibility for every rape lie.

So I do not think we can ignore cases like this.

Every false rape accusation should be shown to the public. By keeping false rape accusations from the public, (they are not 2%)..we are in effect building a faulty and inflammatory prejudice against men/boys who are falsely a cussed.

If society is kept in the dark about the true percentages of false rape accusations (saying they are 2% of the time, when in actuality it is over 50% of the time)..then there are no more un-prejudiced juries, and it is a foundation of our legal system to have unprejudiced juries.
