There is no defense to Letterman's bad taste in this instance. But Palin is dead wrong to suggest that our society only laughs about statutory rape of girls. Our society generally treats rape of females -- statutory and otherwise -- with the somberness of a national epidemic. In contrast, our society treats the rape of boys and of male prisoners as a punchline.
Why the double-standard, Governor? How do you ignore the way we treat our sons? Could it be that you, like so many feminists, view sex as something done to females, and that girls somehow have far less free moral agency than boys? Perhaps boys "want" it more?
You're starting to sound as irrational as the shrieking gender feminist banshees who treated you worse than dog feces prior to the election, Governor. For your own political well-being, do not join them in the tar pit of gender victimization.

Actually I was kinda torqued that Palin is out there demanding an apology on the behalf of all women.
The only people that were wronged in this situation was the Palin daughter and possibly the Palin family.
They are the only ones due an apology. That Mme Palin is attempting to make Letterman apologize for all women is further evidence that Palin is really a class-warfare lovin fembot deep down.
Er, that should be "apologize to all women"
Yeah, I agree. She's dead to me, based on her little dip into the feminist cesspool.
Where is Ronald Reagan when we need him the most?
Letterman isn't wrong. His humor was right on the mark.

This is true, from my perspective.

darn echoes.
Not a Palin fan, but I have to ask --
What if that was YOUR daughter?
One great thing I learned from my Dad - he ALWAYS treated those younger than himself with kindness and respect.
As a much older adult, I cannot fathom making such an ugly disrespectful comment about someone so much younger than myself.
I'm ashamed of Letterman's comments, not for the gender issues, but human decency's sake.
To get respect you have to give respect - Letterman will be relying on young people someday to change his diapers and wipe his ass -
Pick on someone your own level, Letterman.
If it was my daughter I'd hang my head in shame.
Letterman has been targetted by crazy women before, and was even accused of telepathically raping a nut.
Letterman is a comedian -- he makes jokes. It was a tasteless joke, but some jokes are tasteless. So what.
Sarah Palin is playing this to get female votes behind her, and shore up her rather hapless attempt to rise in the GOP hierarchy. It's pathetic and sad what she is doing here, and to be honest she's not someone I could ever support politically after this. True colors are being shown -- underneath that red state exterior lies a true fembot.
As usual, SgtMom claims female privilege; the only fair game for jokes is the male population.
"What if that was YOUR daughter?"
The only appropriate question is, what if this were YOUR child?
When boys are statutorily raped by their teachers, people like Letterman have a field day. I don't recall ANY outrage from any of those "jokes." THAT'S different, Sgt. Mom? Sorry. Studies now show boys suffer just as much as girls when that happens.
Gender should have nothing to do with it -- except this whole discussion underscores the double-standard that I referenced in my post that treats males as second class citizens.
One of the ways for this double standard thinking to change is to change how males view statutory rape and rape in general when men are the victims. People can critize feminists all they want, but it's other men who think rape of males is funny or statutory rape of males is cool and worthy of a high-five.
It would be interesting to see how other countries feel about the rape of males in prison. Is the giggling about it just an American perversion.
Geraldo Rivera says straight out that the statutory rape of a boy isn't as bad as that of a girl, and it's all cool, a comedian makes a joke about female victims and it's a massive crime against humanity. Anyone stupid enough to still need evidence of America's contempt for it's young males, there it is.
I wish to find the exact quote from Geraldo because I will send him links to studies showing that statutory rape is as harmful to boys as girls. That is the only test that matters.
If Letterman was making jokes about children, I would have asked "what if it was YOUR child"
As it were, this was an UGLY remark about the woman's DAUGHTER.
If Letterman made jokes about Levi Whatshisname, I would ask "What if this was YOUR son?
If the joke had been about a young man getting a girl "knocked up" would it have been the same connotation?
Not hardly.
Sara Palin using her daughter to promote her political agenda is shameful, and she deserves to be called out on it.
Her daughter does not.

""Letterman has been targetted by crazy women before, and was even accused of telepathically raping a nut.""
Letterman isn't the one being 'being targeted' - the 'creepy old man' assessment is pretty right on.
It would take a lot more than something like this to ever make me 'hang my head in shame' when it comes to family.
The day that Letterman was targeted with a restraining order because a women telepathically thought he was stalking her, she be remembered, and shown on mens rights web sites, every year on that day to show the women as victim domestic violence industry in the late 20th century America is just absurd, and a kangaroo court.
Edit..she should be should
Check out this link.
http://www.confessions.net/showthread_92813.html
It is a "confession" submitted by a 16 year old who faked a rape in order to blackmail her step father into giving her a car.
Some row ensued then between some men and a few feminist women, who took the line that she had accused a man so he must be guilty of something.
Interestingly one of them posted her definition of the word rape, have a look, and compare it with:
http://abuse.suite101.com/topiclist/article.cfm/false_allegations
"Rape has several meanings, the lesser known being to seize, take or carry by force; or an act of violation, abuse or plunder. Having that clarification, it can be stated that when men are falsely accused of rape, they become a victim of rape. Their reputation and life as they once knew it has been forcibly seized and emotionally, they have been abused and violated."
Since the feminists always accuse an accused man of rape, does that make them rapists?
During the conversation on the confession, feminists accused men of all sorts of things, including all being necrophiliacs, when the man finally exposed that they had admitted to being man-haters, they then complained that they were being insulted. He seems to have given up on them now, shame, he was wiping the floor with them. All they could come up with was calling him nasty names.
Take a look there and leave a comment.
Maybe it was A FUCKING JOKE. Get over it.
I'd like to see the top ten reasons Sgtmom's daughter wasn't raped.
"Maybe it was A FUCKING JOKE. Get over it."
Congratulations on showing your low I.Q. so succinctly.
Go make up another false rape accusation, feminist pig.

For the record, Archivist,I have OFTEN spoken out about female predators, and the equal damage they do. *I* have OFTEN complained about how easily they get away with it because they are women. A female predator acused my son to take the heat off herself - DON'T TELL ME about OUTRAGE.
I haven't assigned false words or make presumptions about you - I'd appreciate you not doing it to me.
Being in the public eye can be a scary and dangerous thing, as David Letterman well knows. He's been victimized by it himself, as has been pointed out.
Making 'jokes' on National TV insinuating this young girl(and he wasn't clear WHICH young girl the joke was about)is sexually promiscuous puts HER in the position of being stalked or harmed, JUST LIKE HE WAS.
As for the nasty Anon - see a doctor. Seriously.
Sgt. Mom, go away.
It doesn't put her in any danger at all. Get a life.
And nobody has made presumptions about you. Some of us have examined your many claims and find them to be non-credible.
Renee,
thank you for the comic relief. Our other troll, Sgt Mom, has been too serious of late.
I would like to ask that everyone please keep the personal attacks out of this. If you wish to debate the issue, that is fine, but please keept it respectful.
As I understood this, Palin's 14 year old daughter was teh one at the game, not Bristol. I don't think the kids should be fair game.
The thing that bothers me the most in all of this, is that the joke calls A-Rod a statutory rapist, and there is absolutely no outcry over this. Welcome to the dismissal of men accused (even if only in a tasteless joke) of rape in our society.
Everyone here has walked right past that issue. Poor taste.... definately. Should Letterman apologize.... definately. But he should apologize to both the Palin's and to Alex Rodriguez.
"The thing that bothers me the most in all of this, is that the joke calls A-Rod a statutory rapist, and there is absolutely no outcry over this."
That is an unbelievably perceptive point. What is worse, to be called a rape victim or to be called a rapist?
He didn't call him a rapist.
No, Letterman shouldn't apologize. He should say "fuck you, it was a joke." We shouldn't enable this kind of phony outrage.
Norm,
Do pray tell why my comment was a "comic relief".
No one is saying that males don't suffer from statutory rape. The point is while society views statutory rape of girls and outrage, statutory rape of boys is not really made into a big deal and sometimes other males view it as a positive thing and not call it for what it is.
For males (at least according to popular culture), a hot female teacher coming on to you is considered "cool" and a dream come true. And if they have sex, well...then that's considered awesome. All you have to do is look at how tv shows, movies, and songs view statutory rape of boys to see this.
And why do some of you (including you Norm) have such a problem with Sgt. Mom? You have completely misinterpreted what she was saying and became REALLY defensive.
And about that "Confessions" page. The girls actually blackmailed her step-dad not to get the car but to get him to stop abusing her mom, because is was kind of a creep, and because he was...well...a jerk. I mean who calls their step-daughter a slut, comments on her breats, and come into her room knowing that she just took a shower? Don't get me wrong though, I'm not excusing her or anything. She should have used a hidden camera or something. Anyway I thought it was funny how the guys there (I think they were guys) assumed that some of the posters were feminists and completely changed the subject by talking about feminism among other things.
He didn't call him a rapist.
Anon,
He made the joke that A-Rod knocked up a 14 year old. That is statutory rape, no matter how you look at it. So therefore, he was indeed calling A-Rod a rapist. Sorry, but we don't redefine the definition of rape, or the legal age of consent here. And 14 is below the legal age of consent.
For those who seem to think the joke was about Bristol, she wasn't on the trip with Sarah. The 14 year old daughter was. And that is classless and tasteless in the extreme.
Should he apologize? Maybe. But I do think that politician's kids should be off limits. Otherwise, I expect to hear a joke in the near future about someone knocking up one of Obama's girls (Funny how that won't be so funny or acceptable).
"The thing that bothers me the most in all of this, is that the joke calls A-Rod a statutory rapist, and there is absolutely no outcry over this."
Outcry in what sense?
That is an unbelievably perceptive point. What is worse, to be called a rape victim or to be called a rapist?
I think that we should stop with the whole "it's worse being this than that" thing. BOTH are awful. To compare the two really alienates and devalues the experience of those that suffered being a rape victim and those that have been falsely accused, or those that even have went through both.
"The thing that bothers me the most in all of this, is that the joke calls A-Rod a statutory rapist, and there is absolutely no outcry over this."
"Outcry in what sense?"
Nevermind. I see what you're saying.
Renee,
Even though you got it, I hope you don't mind if I expound on what I said.
It seems funny that everyone is focusing on the issue of the underage daughter, but the media is being silent about the fact that Letterman, through this joke, and the one from the night before where he said that the toughest part of the trip was keeping Spitzer away from the daughter. I can only surmise from that, that Letterman was calling Palin's daughter a hooker/call girl.
Surprisingly, Rodriguez has been very silent. I would expect a request for an apology by Letterman for implying that Rodriguez statutorily raped Willow.
While I know he has apologized to the Palin family, I think he also owes A-Rod one too.
YMMV
